HAIR DYE ALLERGIC REACTION

Hair Dye Reaction

Hair dyes contain ingredients that can irritate skin or cause an allergy reaction such as paraphenylenediamine (PPD).

PPD is safe to use, but some people prone to have sensitive skin or to develop contact dermatitis.

Symptoms

Mild Irritation

  • Inflamation in area exposed to the dye; scalp, neck, forehead, ears, or eyelids.
  • Symptoms appear approximately within 48 hours.

Allergic Reaction

  • Itchy and sweeling on scalp and face
  • Anaphylaxis reaction may also be present following these symptoms:
  • Swollen lip, eyes, hands, and feet
  • Feeling lightheaded or faint
  • Swelling of the mouth, throat or tongue, which can cause breathing and swallowing difficulties
  • Wheezing
  • Stomach ache, nausea and vomiting
  • Collapsing and becoming unconscious

Treatment

Mild Symptoms :

  • Wash your hair and scalp thoroughly
  • Apply moisturising treatment to the affected skin

Severe Allergic Reaction : Visit the nearest hospital or call an ambulance

Symptomatic Treatment : Your doctor may prescribe oral or topical medicine based on the clinical signs. Steroid cream and or topical, antihistamine medicine may be given accordingly.

Preventive Steps

1. Know what you are allergic to

2. Avoid products that contain PPD

3. Don’t add extra color to avoid adverse allergic reaction

4. Switch to hypoallergenic products

5. Always conduct a patch test before using a PPD product

Patch Tests

Aim: To know whether or not you have an allergic reaction to a product

1. Dab a small amount of the dye solution behind your ear or on your inner elbow and leaving it to dry.

2. Wait for 48 hours

3. Check for any allergic reaction. If there is none, you may proceed to continue.
