Are you doing everything you can to have healthy looking nails? Can you keep your nails looking their best?

Nails reflect our overall health, which is why proper nail care is so important.

Dermatologists’ Tips for Keeping Your Nails Healthy

  • Do not use your nails as a tool, such as opening pop cans
  • Cut nails straight across, use sharp nail scissors
  • Trim toenails regularly
  • Do not bite fingernails or remove the cuticle because it can damage the nail
  • Keep nails clean and dry
  • Wear flip flops at the pool and in public showers
  • Wear shoes that fit properly
  • Avoid “digging out” ingrown toenails
  • Keep nails shaped & free of snags by filing with an emery board
  • Soak feet in warm salt water, when toenails are thick & difficult to cut

Tips to Properly Trim Your Nails

  • Soften the nails. The best time to trim your nails is immediately after taking a bath/shower. If that isn’t possible, soak your nails in lukewarm water for a few minutes to soften them.
  • Gather the proper tools. Use a nail clipper/scissors for your fingernails & a toenail clipper for your toenails. Disinfect your tools monthly.
  • To trim your fingernails, cut almost straight across the nail. Use a nail file/emery board to slightly round the nails at the corners.
  • To reduce your chances of getting an ingrown toenail, cut straight across when trimming your toenails
  • Avoid cutting your cuticles to keep out pathogens.
  • Moisturize after trimming to help keep your nails flexible

Tips to Disinfect Nail Tools

  • Soak a small scrub brush in a bowl of 70-90% isopropyl alcohol
  • Use the brush to scrub your nail clippers/nail scissors
  • Rinse the tools in hot water
  • Dry them completely before putting them away

Remember to disinfect your tools monthly!

If you notice a change in the color, texture, or shape of your nail, see a board-certified dermatologist.
